Undocumented Workers and Occupiers Protest on May Day

Members of two movements are protesting and rallying on May 1, an international day of workers' rights.

Mayday! Mayday! The Movements are...moving.

South Cobb has an active undocumented community of people who protest, speak out, boycott and organize to fight legislation they believe to be unjust, like last year's House Bill 87 and this year's Senate Bill 458.

The Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights is calling for a joint labor-immigrant rally on May 1 in the tradition of the long-standing celebration of May Day as international workers day. Participants will assemble at 11 a.m. at the state Capitol.

GLAHR's theme for the event is "Workers' Rights are Immigrant Rights are Human Rights."

GLAHR's intent for the May Day event is to "mark a historic coming together of immigrants and working people in the face of the austerity measures faced by the economic depression," according to a release from the organization.

"Our communities are struggling against anti-immigrant attacks, detention and deportation; union busting and cuts to workers’ wages and benefits; cuts to public services including education, health care, and transportation; and racist violence, police brutality, and mass incarceration. Propelled by strong community based organizations increased labor participation, and leaders have stepped up all across Atlanta to demand the state we deserve," the release continued.

The ralliers have the following demands:

  • Stop Secure Communities and 287g programs.
  • Stop the Attacks on Workers and Unions!
  • Jobs for All and No to E-verify.
  • End Deportations, End Racism, and End the New Jim Crow era.

Occupy Atlanta will also host a May Day march on May 1 at Woodruff Park, complete with a free market, cookouts and workshops. Click here for more information.
