Which School Calendars Do You Want, Cobb?

Do you want weeklong fall breaks, or a weeklong winter break? Tell us which calendar(s) you want to see the board members approve this month.

Fall break, or no fall break? That is one of the major questions that will be answered when school board members weigh in on proposed calendars for the next two school years.

Cobb School Superintendent Michael Hinojosa is proposing two calendar options for each of the next two school years. The calendar issue will be discussed at the Cobb Board of Education’s 8:30 a.m. work session Wednesday. The meeting will be held in the boardroom of the Cobb County School District’s central office, 514 Glover St., Marietta.

The options before board members include a "traditional" calendar with short breaks outside of the Christmas and Thanksgiving holiday periods and spring break, and a "balanced" calendar with longer breaks typically built around other holidays.

What calendar(s) do you want to see the board approve? Should board members consider any tweaks to these proposals, or different proposals altogether? Tell us in the comments.

Here are the highlights of the two options for the next two school years:

Presidents’ Day, Feb. 15, would be the sole student and staff holiday that month. The school year would end on Thursday, May 19, 2016.
      • Version B starts the school year on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015. Students and staff would get a week off Oct. 5-9, as well as a full week off for Thanksgiving. Another weeklong holiday would come the week of Feb. 15, which is Presidents’ Day. The school year would end on Wednesday, May 25, 2016.

Action on the calendars could take place at the board's Sept. 26 regular meeting. Hinojosa has not recommended which version of the calendars for the board to approve.
