Mableton Nonprofit to Rock Out with Local Artists

Rock bands are in demand for the Battle of the Bands segment during the concert series "Mableton Rocks" slated from 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22.

A local nonprofit is calling up local rock bands to organize a concert in a nontraditional effort to promote the city of Mableton.

The Amateur Advocates Association, the organization behind Mableton Day, is hosting a Mableton Rocks festival on Oct. 22 at the Barnes Amphitheatre from 4-11 p.m., rain or shine.

Included in the event are local and national rock artists, food and beverages and more than 30 vendors selling various wares.

A Battle of the Bands segment during the festival will allow Mableton Rocks artists to compete against one another for consideration as an opening act during the 2012 concert season.

Interested participants must be at least 16 or older to participate without parental consent. The deadline to submit audition packages has been extended to Sept. 1.

Like Mableton Day, organizers want to make Mableton Rocks an annual community tradition.

Concert Director Albert McRae is seeking volunteers and community sponsors to help get the word out about the event.

“We’re taking a whole different approach to promote our community,” he said. “We want to keep a good word out about Mableton because this is a prime location where good things are happening.”

Hosting a concert featuring local rock bands will be a first at the amphitheatre, said McRae, who also is founder of the association. He and other organizers have put on Mableton Day for six years and have helped host the Mableton Car Show four years.

Melissa Banks, entertainment coordinator for the event, said the goal is to raise money.

“We’re trying to develop programs and community activities and get together,” Banks said. “This a fundraiser for Mableton Day. Mableton Day was excellent. It was our largest turnout, and our first year at the Mable House.”

According to a release, Amateur Advocate Association is a nonprofit dedicated to helping at-risk youth through educational enrichment and providing a positive family environment and community activities.
