Volunteers Needed for Mableton Clothing Drive

New clothes will be available for needy families free of charge during a clothes drive Aug. 27 at the Family Life Restoration Center Inc.

A local nonprofit will be providing free clothes to families in need this month and are seeking community volunteers to help prepare for the event. Luther Washington, executive director of Family Life Restoration Center Inc. at 6105 Mableton Parkway in Mableton, said a donor who wishes to remain anonymous delivered the clothes he plans to give away.

“I figured, let’s have just one day and be a blessing to the community,” he said.

The event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Aug. 27. The nonprofit is seeking at least 10 volunteers to help them unload about seven pallets of clothing prior to the drive on Friday, Aug. 26.

“Volunteers also will assist in helping families pick up what they’d like to have,” Washington said. “It’s all brand new stuff, and it’s going to be a huge blessing for children going back to school, saving parents a lot of money.”

Clothes available for pickup are for men, women and children of all sizes. New women’s shoes also are available and a select variety of shoes for children. Three outfits will be available per person, per family, Washington said.

Volunteering for this event will allow the community to see firsthand the economic hardships several families are facing at the moment, said volunteer Reba McBaniel.

“It allows you to see exactly how and what people need,” she said. “If you’re on the outside and you don’t know what somebody’s going through, this is the only way to see what they’re going through.”

Family Life Restoration Center Inc. is a faith-based nonprofit agency that provides services clothing and food to families seeking assistance. The center provides other services, including a computer lab and programs for school-aged children.

“Everything we do is free. We don’t charge for clothes or food,” Washington said. “Here, they won’t have to show an ID card and go through our process.”

Angela Washington, Luther’s wife and office manager of the nonprofit, said they are glad to help lighten someone else’s load.

“I feel excited,” she said. “Whenever there’s an opportunity to lighten someone else’s burden, it’s a blessing.”
