There’s a Little Something for Everyone This Weekend in South Cobb

Catch a local talent show, help support the Arts, or become Atlanta's next "Biggest Loser".

Being a “loser” isn’t always a bad thing, especially when it comes to losing weight and helping others. Come and visit the Extreme Makeover Health and Wellness Expo on Saturday, and take part in the Atlanta’s Biggest Loser Challenge, at  the Atlanta Hyperbaric Center in Mableton. This one day event, begins at 11 a.m., and will include seminars held by top ranking professionals in the fields of  nutrition, exercise and stress management. Attendees will receive their own personal health and fitness evaluations, as well as access to an oxygen bar, wellness exams, supplements, digital EMG, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, massage and a variety of other offerings. A $10 donation is required to attend, with proceeds going to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Space is limited, so call  770-948-4511 to reserve your space today.

Enjoy an evening of lively entertainment, and help raise scholarship funding for children in the community arts programs, by attending the first annual Reach a Child Bridge the Future Step Show, being held Saturday, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., at the . This event is being sponsored by Media in the Metro, a non-profit organization dedicated to the betterment of community youths, ages 11 - 17, along with The Community Playhouse Arts and Cultural Center & Media. Tickets for the event are $5 per person, and will feature a fraternity and sorority step-off.

You never know what you can accomplish until you put your mind to it. Come out and see what other’s have accomplished on their own, at the Self Taught Artist - Naturally Gifted Talent Show this Sunday, at the , starting at 5 p.m. There will be a variety of award winning musical entertainment, along with delicious food provided by Chef Henri West, and a special surprise guest, to keep the evening exciting. The age old art of home stitching and sewing, seems to have fallen by the wayside somewhat, in these days of mass produced clothing, drapery, quilts, etc. If you still like doing things the old-fashioned way however, be sure not to miss Saturday’s Sew-A-Thon, at ., in their new 3,700 square-foot facility at 688 Puckett Drive in Mableton. This all day event, running from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m., will bring together home sewers from parts all around, to socialize, share tips and sew to their hearts’ content. You will even have the chance to show your newly made creations on the in-house runway. Snacks and meals will be provided throughout the day, so there will no interruptions to slow you down. Tickets are $25, and space is limited, so reserve your spot today. Follow this link to purchase tickets. Attendees will need to bring their own sewing machine, tools and supplies.

Saturday is Powder Springs Day, and if that’s not a good enough excuse to spend a beautiful Fall day outdoors, then grab the kids and head on down to the square to watch a parade, and enjoy a full day of fun, food, arts and crafts and lively music. The festivities start at 10 a.m., and include a kid’s zone play area, a variety of food vendors, a live musical performance by The Mustangs, at 6 p.m., and a fireworks display at dusk. The event is free, but food and concession item prices vary.


Take in some fresh air, and help support the fight against children’s cancer, by attending the Curing Kids Cancer Softball Tournament, being held at the Al Bishop Softball Complex, beginning at  6 p.m., Friday night. Along with cheering on your favorite team, there will be plenty of fun activities for the kids, as well as raffle prizes. The event is free, but donations are requested, which will go to benefit children’s cancer research. If you don’t get your softball fix on Friday night, come out for more games on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m.
