Take a stroll through a gallery

Red Cockerill Art Gallery displays local works of art and offers classes designed to bring out the hidden artist in you.

Your teens are holding a car wash at the high school Saturday. The grandparents volunteered to take the younger children to a movie on Sunday afternoon. Your tweens take tap on Wednesday evening. It’s your time. Take it.

Each week we’ll tell you one great idea to give you a much deserved break, and make your life a little easier, maybe a whole lot easier.

Taking a leisurely walk through an art gallery can be just the thing to take a busy mom’s mind off day-to-day chores, if only for a short time. Combine that time, however, with learning how to paint your own work of art, and you will have a pasttime that can provide hours of calming refuge anytime you need it.

At Red Cockerill Art Gallery, located at 2845 Cemetary St. in Austell, patrons can have the best of both worlds. Spend some time viewing art created by lifetime resident and gallery owner Ann Cockerill, with several pieces depicting scenes of the local community from “days gone by.”  Visitors can also sign up to take art instruction from this award-winning painter, with classes being offered on Thursdays, 10 a.m. until noon and Fridays, 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. The cost per class is $15 per person. Saturday workshops are also available on select dates from 2:30 p.m. until 5 p.m., with the cost of each class being $25 per person which includes supplies. Check the gallery website for Saturday workshops. Take some time for yourself, and have fun developing your inner artist.
