Races, Fireworks, Turkey Shoots This Labor Day Weekend

Qualify for next year's Peachtree Road Race at the Atlanta Labor Day 10K Classic or, show off your sharp shooting skills at an old-fashioned turkey shoot for charity.

Work up an appetite for all those hot dogs and hamburgers most of us will be munching on Labor Day by running in the Atlanta Labor Day 10K Classic being held on Monday. Registration starts at 7 a.m. at 6335 Riverview Rd. S.E. in Mableton with the race beginning at 8 a.m. sharp. The course will travel along the river and runners can choose the full 10K route or a shorter 5K run with both eligible to be used for next year’s Peachtree Road Race qualifying run.The race is limited to 2,000 runners with the last day to register being Sept. 3. Cost is $35 per person, or $30 per person on teams consisting of 10 or more participants.

It’s not quite the same as trudging through the woods looking for wild game, but it can be just as fun. Come out for a worthy cause and a good old-fashioned turkey shoot this Saturday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Best shooters win a turkey or ham for the holidays and all the proceeds go to community projects serving needy South Cobb children. Bring your own gun or use one available at the site, located at the American Legion Post 216, 3914 Ewing Road in Austell. The cost is $5 per person. For further information call 770-943-7030.

Ease into the long Labor Day weekend and enjoy a delicious margarita or icy cold beer while listening to live acoustic music at . From 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights, customers can relax and unwind to great tunes and leave their work week worries behind. While you’re there, be sure to try some of the best Mexican fusion cuisine around.

With the sports season upon us, it’s football fever at . With plenty of big screen TVs to watch your favorite teams on and weekend beer and food specials, you can’t go wrong by stopping in for a little “me time” or a fun night out with friends and neighbors.

Runners rule this Labor Day weekend at the Run Before We Rock Celebrate Freedom 5K/10K race and Christian music festival being held at . The Fish 104.7 radio station is sponsoring the event along with Natalie’s Orchid Island Juice Company and ChristianRunners.org. After the race, which begins at 7:30 a.m for the 10K and 8 a.m. for the 5K, runners and spectators can enjoy a full day of fellowship and fun with friends, family and neighbors. There will be an on-site food court featuring Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q, Moe’s and Chick-fil-A and a festive fireworks display to end the evening. Click this link for race fees and details. The festival is free but, tickets are required and can be picked up at Ingles, BP gas stations and Family Christian stores.

Take a step back in time, and come out to the Powder Springs on Friday from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. to view classically restored cars from yesteryear. On the first, third and fifth Friday of each month, members of the Powder Springs Push Rods Car Club cruise into Zaxby’s where attendees can view these beauties up close and talk to the owners who so loving restored them. Grab the kids and neighbors and have a “blast from the past” experience at this fun event.

So the rain put a damper on your fireworks fix for the Fourth of July this year. Well, Douglas County is coming to the rescue with their re-scheduled fireworks show this Saturday at 9 p.m. at the . The show is free and open to all. The best place for viewing the display will be in the parking lot of on 7001 Concourse Parkway, or across the street at Arbor Mall.
