Austell city council approves salt/sand spreader and County Commissioners meet this morning.

  1. At its regular monthly meeting, the Austell City Council approved the purchase of a salt and sand spreader that costs the city a little more than $3,000 and includes the installation of rubber treads.
  2. The second public hearing on the nearly 70 code amendments will be held at this morning’s Board of Commissioners’ meeting at 9 a.m. at 100 Cherokee St. in Marietta. Most of the time at the last public hearing on the code amendments was spent on the Mableton Form-Based Code. Many of those who voiced their opposition on the code were from outside of Mableton. They mostly were concerned that the code would affect their areas of the county in the future. Appeals would be allowed if individuals disagreed with the future approvals of developments that fall within the guidelines of the code.   3. Also, the county commissioners are expected to vote on approval of nearly $2 million being transferred for the new Austell Senior Center that is to be built in Clarkdale Park, instead of Legion Park, which has flooded twice. Each of those times, Clarkdale Park never flooded, which is why it was chosen as the new location for the center. The senior center would also be open for public use in the evenings. Currently, the senior center has been temporarily moved to a Powder Springs location.
  4. Signings Update: Darien Stewart of has signed to play for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, after visiting the university on Friday. According to the AJC's College Recruiting blog, had three players sign scholarships on Wednesday: Garrison Ushery with St. Augustine (football), William Smalls with Florida A&M (football), and Chukwudi Onyeukwu with Pittsburgh (soccer).
  5. Kate Wright of Bloom’n Gardens Landscape, LLC in Mableton has been chosen as one of the finalists for Enterprising Women magazine’s Enterprising of the Year, which recognizes female entrepreneurs from the U.S. and around the globe who have businesses with fast growth, who mentor or actively support other women and girls involved in entrepreneurship and who demonstrate their community leadership. The ninth anniversary gala awards celebration, where the award finalists and winners will be recognized, will be held March 10-11 in Boca Raton, Fla.
  6. Anthony Pearson, a counselor at Mableton’s was named as a top 10 finalist for Counselor of the Year by the American School Counselor Association. He was formally recognized in Washington, D.C. last week.
