Mableton Farmers Market Begins Thursday

Get ready for more local fresh veggies and fruit at Mableton Farmers Market.

It’s back! Get ready for those homegrown tomatoes, squash, preserves, Georgia roasted coffee and of course, peaches.

The Mableton Farmers Market returns for its second year on Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will run regularly on Thursdays at this time until Sept. 29. Come out and grab some great fresh goods to enjoy on your family’s table! The event is held in the parking lot at the Mable House complex.

Market Coordinator Cheryl Mayerik admits that the market is held at a strange time for farmers market, but explains that it is a strategic move.

“We are trying to serve the needs of older adults who find crowded Saturday markets and markets held during evening rush hour traffic a challenge. Finding affordable, fresh produce nearby and visiting with neighbors are important to the wellbeing of older adults,” Mayerik said. “This is why Lifelong Mableton, a project of the Atlanta Regional Commission, took the lead in establishing the market.”

Another plus for seniors is that the market vendors are able to accept Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program Vouchers, which enable low-income seniors to $20 of fresh veggies and fruit once a year. Mothers will also be glad to know that the market also accepts WIC.

Residents can participate in weekly events and classes with speakers throughout the market's season as well.

The Mableton Farmers Market is the first one the county has been involved in creating. The Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs department help sponsor the market.

“We love that the market has become a gathering place for Mableton residents who visit with neighbors and the farmers and spend time on the grounds of the adjacent historic home and tour the art gallery which is also located on the property,” said Vanita Dauphanais, coordinator of the Mable House Arts Center.

The market would not have been a reality without the joint partnership between Lifelong Mableton, Mableton Improvement Coalition, Cobb County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department as well as the Cobb & Douglas Public Health organization, the farmers market would not be possible.

Farmers interested in selling at the market, organizations interested in bringing a group to the market, and older adults who would like more information about the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers may contact Mayerik at (404)463-3125 or at cmayerik@atlantaregional.com.

Don’t forget to enter the opening day raffle to receive a fruit and gift basket.
