Local Nonprofits That Are Making A Difference

There are many nonprofit organizations in South Cobb, and we're going to highlight a handful of them, but they're all important in this community.

Pebblebrook Junior Falcons--This youth organization began in 1983, and nearly 15 years ago, Albert McCrae became the head of the organization, which has grown immensely in that time. McCrae, who is a leader within the South Cobb community and an alumnus of Pebblebrook High, has dedicated much of the last 14 years of his life to this organization, and he said 2011 will be the biggest year yet. The organization, which initially focused primarily on football, now has cheerleading, track & field, soccer and basketball. Because of McCrae and his relationships throughout the community, the organization will also have a culinary arts component as well as an aerospace program this year. Austell Community Taskforce---Established in 2001, the taskforce has become an umbrella organization over a number of smaller groups that have varying focuses, including community development and enrichment programs for children and families. The taskforce also seeks to inform the public about resources that are available in the area. For more information, read our on the organization or contact the organization’s chairwoman, Tamisha Peterson, at austellcommunitytaskforce@yahoo.com.

Mableton Improvement Coalition---This membership-based organization is a vocal and very visible advocate for the people of the Mableton area. They have had an important part in many of the initiatives in Mableton to create positive change in the area, such as working with the design charette for the Mableton Form-Based Code and the Mableton Community Garden, for example. They have a strong and active community base, and they also give back with events like their regular Adopt-a-Mile cleanup days and gift-giving at Christmas to children at the local Boys & Girls Club. For more information, check out their regular column right here on South Cobb Patch and become a member at mableton.org.
