SPLOST Unofficially Passes By 79 Votes

It's finally here. Weeks of holding rallies, sending e-mails, placing signage, writing letters and attending forums on the SPLOST issue all end today. Check back with us throughout the day as we keep you updated.

The SPLOST four-year extension unofficially passed Tuesday night with a margin of 79 votes, 33 less than the amount of votes by which the last SPLOST passed in 2005 when about 40,000 Cobb residents cast their votes.

The Cobb County Board of Elections & Registration's website indicates that 42,971 people voted in the election, with 21,525 Cobb citizens siding with SPLOST and 21,446 against it.

Just under 11 percent of Cobb's 392,589 active registered voters cast their vote on the SPLOST, which would begin on Jan. 1, 2012, just as the current SPLOST ends. The sales tax would remain at 6 percent.
