Free Music Galore and So Much More This Weekend in South Cobb

Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre is holding two nights of free concerts and Austell is having its 5th Annual Concert in the Park on Saturday.

Time to get out and enjoy the cooler weather this weekend at the 5th Annual Concert in the Park on Saturday in Collar Park, located at 2625 Joe Jerkins Blvd in Austell. This free music festival is being held in remembrance of the tragic events that befell the U.S. on Sept. 11, 2001 and is sponsored by the Austell Business Association and the Performing acts include Atlanta gospel artist Al Holley at 12 p.m., Ramblin’ Grass at 3 p.m., and Rambunctious at 6 p.m. There will also be a bounce house and face painting for the kids, as well as food concessions and a variety of vendors. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and show your support of this annual community event.

The  The South Cobb Arts Alliance will host their fourth of five Candlelite Concert series performances this Saturday night. Kayla Taylor Jazz will perform jazz musical stylings from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s at the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre. The gates open at 7 p.m., with full concessions on-site or bring your own favorites and have a fun picnic outdoors. Tables that seat four are also available for a $50 rental fee. If two free concerts aren't enough to fill your weekend, be sure not to miss Sunday night's “America We Must Not Forget” free musical event being sponsored by . This is Due West UMC’s 13th Annual Festival of Music concert and will be performed by the church’s adult and children’s choirs, accompanied by a full orchestra. Our nation’s history, heroes and Christian heritage will be remembered through music and narrative stories during this family friendly event. The concert is being held at the and begins at 7 p.m.

There’s not much more that shows what it means being a Southerner than an afternoon of barbecue, horseshes and bikes. This Sunday, beginning at noon, and Eddie Lee and Southwind Racing will be holding a “Back to the Track” party, in honor of Southwind Racing’s return to the AHDRA (All Harley Drag Racing Association) circuit. There will be live music provided by Rambunctious, along with great barbecue, a horseshoe-throwing contest and plenty of awesome bikes to view. Barbecue plates will be sold at $7.50 each, with a $10 fee to enter your bike in the show and a $5 fee to enter the horseshoe-throwing contest. The parking lot at Sweetwater Inn will be reserved for bikes. Parking for attendees will be in the now defunct Fat Cat’s parking lot.

So, you didn’t win that Thanksgiving turkey or ham at last week’s turkey shoot. Well, here’s your chance to give it another “shot,” so to speak, this Saturday at the American Legion Post 216 turkey shoot for charity. The entry fee is just $5 and all proceeds go to the local charity organizations that assist South Cobb’s children in need during the holidays. Earn your bragging rights as a sharp shooter and help out a good cause in the meantime. The event will be held from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. For further information call 770-943-7030.

It’s not quite the same as hunting big game in an African jungle, but hunting butterflies can be just as enjoyable to some people. This Saturday, is offering a guided “Butterfly Safari” in search of such lovely species as the Tiger Swallowtail and the Fiery Skipper. The safari will take place on 80-acres of mosaic grassland and begins at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Pre-registration is required, along with a $5 fee plus a $5 parking fee. Call 770-732-7275 to sign up.

Having a beloved family pet can be one of the most rewarding experiences for children and adults In an effort to compete in the ASPCA’s Save More Lives challenge, the facility will host a pet Adopt-A-Thon this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The event will include vendors, food, police K-9 demonstrations, training demonstrations, animal rescue groups, raffles for prizes and special adoption rates for pets needing homes.
