Schools redistricting meeting tonight, rally on the Capitol

Your daily roundup of what's happening in South Cobb.

  • The first public meeting about Cobb County Schools redistricting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Campbell High School in Smyrna. With three new replacement schools---, and a Smyrna elementary school---to be completed over the next three years, the school district is gearing up to redraw its zoning maps and they want to hear from parents and stakeholders in the community on the best way to do just that.
  • Mableton Community Day is Saturday. Let us know if you plan on running or walking the 5K race that day. If so, please contact me at kiri.walton@patch.com to be included in a story. The sixth annual Mableton Community Day is set to be the largest one yet. It begins at 8 a.m. with a 5K Race and has entertainment all day long at the Mable House complex. For the complete lineup, click here. The event culminates with the first of the South Cobb Arts Alliance summer Candlelite Concert Series featuring local favorite, Kerry Ayres and the Rambunctious. The entire event is free and will also include nearly 100 local vendors, a classic car show, storytelling, inflatables and much more!
  • At 10:30 this morning, Rep. Alisha Morgan is holding a rally on the steps of the Capitol to, as stated in an email sent from her office on Monday afternoon, “show the four justices just how wrong they are” when the Georgia Supreme Court justices handed down their decision on Monday morning that the Georgia State Charter Commission is unconstitutional. Morgan had a large part to do with the creation of this commission. CORRECTION: The rally is being held by the Georgia Charter Schools Association, not by Morgan, who will be speaking at the event.

“The loss of our Commission would send a loud signal to school districts that they have no fear in rejecting virtually all charter school applications, including schools that will be up for renewal in the future! We must show our united support against this extraordinarily significant ruling which will have potentially dramatic consequences upon Georgia’s education system,” the email stated.

  • Graduation season is here! We want your graduation announcements. Post them in our announcement section. If you or your child has a funny or moving graduation story, please contact Editor Kiri Walton at kiri.walton@patch.com. Here is an inspiring story about an Austell grandmother named valedictorian of Strayer University. It took her 25 years to graduate. It’s never too late to accomplish your goals.
