Community Market, Healthy Eating, Open Mic Night for a Cause and More this Weekend in South Cobb

Sing the day away at the Austell Community Market and Bazaar, or spend a lazy day outdoors paddling along the banks of Sweetwater Creek.

Fashion, free music, arts, crafts and great food. You’ll find it all this Saturday at the Community Market and Bazaar event, being held from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 2710 Jefferson St., in downtown l. This free community gathering, will feature plenty of activities for the kids, as well as a variety of merchandise and food for sale from local vendors. D.J. Dice will also be on hand, providing music and giving attendees a chance to stretch those vocal cords at karaoke. Be sure to stick around for the free fashion show hosted by Faye’s Closet at 2 p.m.

In the hustle and bustle of the modern world, eating healthy seems like an almost impossible task at times. For some quick tips on easy healthy cooking, as well as health information from a certified nutritionist, reserve your space now for the “How to Eat Healthy in an Hour” workshop, being held this Saturday from 12 p.m. until 1p.m., at the health store. Nutritionist, Antoinette Ouattara, MPH, with her associate, Chef Mopac, will have a variety of healthy home made foods to sample, along with fresh smoothies and nutritious snacks for the kids. Let your music be heard, and help raise funds for a good cause this Friday at 6 p.m., for open mic night, being held by the . This year, a grandchild of one of the owners of the Powder Springs Coffee and Bake Shoppe, was diagnosed with type 1 juvenile diabetes, and the family is currently raising funds for the JDRF Walk for a Cure being held in October. On open mic nights, a portion of the proceeds will go towards this worthy cause. Local bands, musicians and residents are invited to come out and help with funding while enjoying a night of free music.

Enjoy the beautiful Fall weather, and kayak your way to serenity, this Saturday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at . See the park from a different perspective, during this peaceful two hour kayak tour. The cost is $15 per person, and includes the kayak, safety jacket and paddle. This tour is for adults who can swim, and have some kayaking or canoeing experience. Parking is an additional $5 per car. Cobb County homeowners looking for ideas to update and/or improve their residences, should certainly not miss the 28th Annual Fall Atlanta Home Show happening this weekend, September 23 - 25, at the . Hundreds of local home improvement companies displaying their products and services will be in attendance, as well as John Giddling, HGTV member and owner of John Gidding Design Inc, who will be appearing live to speak about about home improvements and to answer audience questions. There will also be plenty of activities for the kids, along with strolling entertainers throughout the day. Ticket pricing is $10 for adults, with seniors over 65 and children 12 and under for free. Fall is upon us, and with that comes outdoor festivals, community happenings and last but not least, the North Georgia State Fair at . This annual event begins September 22 and runs through October 2, and offers something for everyone to enjoy. Included with the admission price will be free concerts on select days starting at 8 p.m., along with three new entertainment acts for 2011 including Kachunga and the Alligator Show, hypnotist Tammy Harris Barton and the Keith King BMX Bike Stunt Show. Also new this year, is the Wildcat rollercoaster ride, that’s sure to get the heart racing. Admission pricing is $5 for adults, $2 for students ages 7-18 and free for children 6 and under. Ride tickets are $1.00 each, $20 for 22 tickets and $50 for 55 tickets. Parking is $3. Discount tickets can be purchased at all stores.
