Austell's Legion Park Officially Open to the Public

Nearly 70 people came out for the grand opening of the park, which had been closed since the flood of September 2009.

The excitement was palpable on Wednesday afternoon as about 60 people waited for Austell Mayor Joe Jerkins to cut the symbolic ribbon with huge red scissors of Legion Park, which was destroyed by the flood of 2009.

The appreciative mayor smiled the entire afternoon.

“It looks better than it’s ever looked,” Jerkins said.

Everyone munched on hot dogs, hugged and smiled as they waited for The Big Cut, except for the little ones who helped themselves to the park’s new playground.

After cutting the ribbon, Jerkins presented three proclamations to Georgia Power, Lowe’s and 11Alive news.

“We’ve never had an easier group to work with. We’ve never had a more appreciative group to work with,” said Randall Burks of Lowe’s.

Employees from 33 Lowe’s stores came out this past week to help create the final product of the park.

The new fields will get lots of use this weekend when 18 teams play 41 games on Saturday and Sunday as part of the Global Sports Authority youth baseball league.

“It feels great. We’ve been waiting for close to a year now,” Wayne Roberts, director of GSA, said of the park’s grand opening.
