“It’s the Dawn of a New Day in Cobb: Launch of Equal Justice & Opportunity for All" Initiative

Cobb United for Change Coalition - Cobb County, Georgia: As a result of the Trayvon Martin tragedy and travesty and the Justice for Trayvon March, Rally & Vigil recently organized in Cobb County by the Cobb United for Change Coalition (CUCC), there has been an unprecedented outpouring of support and resources, in Cobb as well as around the nation, to insure that this tragedy and travesty is not repeated again, and that our society truly honors its principle of equal justice and opportunity for all. To that end, the Cobb Coalition is organizing and mobilizing its resources and many new volunteers who have arisen for this purpose in an “Equal Justice & Opportunity Initiative” to begin an extensive and intensive review and evaluation of all Cobb County educational, law enforcement, judicial, economic/business, electoral, and other institutions, as well as elected and appointed officials and agencies. Dr. Ben Williams, President of the Cobb County SCLC, a veteran civil rights activist and founding member of the Cobb United for Change Coalition,  stated: “We have not seen this amount of interest, energy and resolve, from all sectors of our community, since the days of the Freedom Riders and Dr. King, so this is definitely another turning point and watershed moment in the history of our community, state and nation.”
Rich Pellegrino, Director of the Cobb Immigrant Alliance, and a founding member of the Cobb United for Change Coalition, stated: “We have received calls and offers of support from people of all backgrounds, in Cobb and surrounding areas, who were shocked at this tragedy and travesty and the fact that justice and opportunity is still, in 2013, denied to people based on the color of their skin. This is definitely the dawn of a new day for equal justice and opportunity in Cobb and nationwide!” To launch this initiative, the Cobb United for Change Coalition is convening a General Assembly and Town Hall Meeting, and the public is invited to attend: Date:  17 August 2013, Saturday Time:  10:00 AM Place:  Victory International Center (Redeem Christian Church of God)               5228 Brookwood Drive, SW               Mableton, GA  30126           Some of the activities and work groups which the Coalition will be mobilizing and forming at this Saturday’s meeting, to insure equal justice and opportunity for all, include:   Court Watch, Cop Watch, Voter Registration, Getting the Vote out in 2014, Black/Brown Dialogues; Healing Racism Workshops, Legislative Advocacy, Criminal Justice/Prison Reform, Youth Services, and Economic Sanctions.  The public is invited to attend, learn about, and join one or more of these activities.  Contacts: Sharon J.
