Niki Broun can't wait for her husband, 10th District U.S. Rep. Paul Broun, to throw his hat in the ring for the 2014 U.S. Senate race, according to a report in the ViralRead blog. A post picked up by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Niki Broun told the group Citizens Helping America Restore Government Ethics on Tuesday that her husband had her permission to run, and that he was announcing his candidacy. Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss announced last week that he would not seek a third term, opening the way for a spirited primary among potential successors. Rep. The Cobb Board of Education adopted a resolution this morning to call for a March 2013 referendum to extend the Education SPLOST. But the job of selling voters on a $717 million school construction and maintenance project list figures to be a challenging one, given Cobb's recent SPLOST track record. The one-cent sales tax, if approved by voters, would begin in January 2014 and would be collected through December 2018. But before the vote, representatives of a local taxpayers group and the Georgia Tea Party spoke out against a March referendum. Voters in three states—Maine, Maryland and Washington—approved same-sex marriage, joining the lot that already includes Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont. Georgia voters gave the state more authority over charter schools on Tuesday, passing a constitutional amendment empowering a commission to overrule local school districts that reject charter school petitions. In a move that fell in line with expectations, Mitt Romney was projected to win Georgia’s 16 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Republican candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Both major parties will have official watch parties at hotels near East Cobb, and the public is invited. The Cobb Republican Party has scheduled a "Victory Party" from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Suites Northwest Atlanta, 2999 Windy Hill Road, located at the intersection of Powers Ferry Road.
