Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
So, one week of this fitness challenge and lifestyle change under my belt, and I’ve lost a grand total of 4.2 pounds. Not bad, especially because from Friday until Tuesday, I was coughing and sneezing like an extra in “Contagion.” On Wednesday, I walked and jogged on the treadmill at my apartment complex for about 30 minutes. The heat was turned off completely, so I probably became sick from working out in the cold temperatures. On Thursday, I went to Lailah’s Studio at 4968 Austell Road in Austell and took a Zumba class taught by Katia Longaretti. Katia does not play. While in graduate …
I've been carrying around a 2-year-old boy with me every day for the last year or so. Well, he's grown into a 2-year-old boy. Yep, I've been lugging around an extra 25 pounds, the equivalent of a 2-year-old boy, and I fully intend to lose this toddler in South Cobb. For a gal who loves to rock a pair of heels as often as possible, I’ve certainly had to invest in flats now. So, I’ve made the same New Year’s resolutions I’ve been making for years: to lose weight, to eat healthier, to exercise regularly. This time, more is at stake. This time, it has to be a lifestyle change. This year is …
Happy Father’s Day, South Cobb. I’m spending today with my father. My dad taught me how to ride a bike, and he taught me how to drive a car. He washed my hair in the kitchen sink and would watch "Blossom" with me when he’d rather watch football. He kept the macaroni art and handmade snowflake ornaments I made as a child, and he came to every recital, every choral performance, every play and poetry reading I had. He made me chuckle and shake my head with his corny jokes and country sayings. I am so grateful for him and what he's done. Since it’s Father’s Day, I thought I’d share the reasons I …
This is a letter that State Rep. David Wilkerson of Austell sent to the members of the Cobb County Board of Education. He has given South Cobb Patch permission to run it here. Dear Board Members,   Good evening. I have had the opportunity to interact with each of you in one way or another over the last several years.  Several months ago, I made a decision to stay out of the recent calendar issue.  However, at this point I am concerned as a parent, a taxpayer, and a legislator.  I am concerned because my children attend our Cobb schools and this continued bickering does nothing for academic …
Osama bin Laden, the man who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks, is dead as a result of a firefight, and his body has been retrieved and is in American custody, according to The New York Times. Nearly 10 years ago, the World Trade Center twin towers came crumbling down in New York City right before our eyes. Nearly 3,000 U.S. citizens were dead as a result of the attacks, which included one on the Pentagon and United Airlines Flight 93, which had been redirected by those on board to a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, saving countless lives. As Americans, we will always remember where we …
On Wednesday, severe winds and tornadoes ripped through North Georgia and throughout Alabama, including Tuscaloosa, destroying homes, buildings and lives. One year ago, I was there in Tuscaloosa earning my master’s degree in community journalism from the University of Alabama. Needless to say, the tornado hit home for me. Watching the videos of the damage there is difficult and heartbreaking. As a Nashville native, I can say that I’ve experienced my share of tornadoes, so I probably do not get as scared as others, but the aftermath is still just as breathtaking and just as devastating. If you…
Robin Meyer, chair of the Mableton Improvement Coalition wrote in an e-mail to the editor: The Mableton Form Based Code is a strong, positive step for Mableton and it is supported by the Mableton Improvement Coalition and the hundreds of citizens who participated in a week of planning and two public meetings since that time.  This new approach to managing development will provide more certainty for property owners in the district and for the community than is currently available under the existing zoning process.  The look of the buildings, how they relate to each other, and the possible …
It started with a craving for breakfast food, probably brought on by cabin fever. I didn't want to leave my warm apartment, but I also wanted something other than saltines or yogurt. So, I put on my warmest clothes and went outside to my car. The parking lot of my apartment complex could have been mistaken for an ice skating rink. My entire little car was covered in about four inches of snow that was topped off by a thick sheet of ice. After stabbing the ice with the scraper and then knocking it off onto the ground for about 20 minutes while the car warmed up, I was ready to hit the road. (…
Mrs.Walton, I live in the Mableton area along with my wife and 3 daughters and last night I came across the South Cobb Patch.  It's a great resource for local news and happening and I also like the general upbeat, pace and tempo (if that makes sense) of the site.  When reading through some of the articles I get a sense of energy and enthusiasm that is quite refreshing.  Surely you must be a high energy person yourself. :-).  Also, I wanted to find out about the process for recommending articles or stories to get published in the South Cobb patch.  One area of particular interest to me is …
It's been two weeks since South Cobb Patch went live. We've been constantly updating the site and adding new features, finding freelance correspondents to report the news in South Cobb, maintaining one of the best online directories around and making our community calendar as user-friendly as possible. We wanted to take time out from all these things to tell you why we're here and what this site is all about. Simply put, it's about you. We've built Patch so that you have plenty of opportunities to comment on stories, share your opinions, post photos and announcements and add events to the …
