What Did You Do In School Today?

Most parents complain about their kids telling them nothing. Not a problem in my house.

Many parents ask their kids the same questions every day, "How was school today?" to get the standard reply, "Nothing."  My own niece tells her mom every day that school was "good," but when asked for more information gets nothing.

Not in my house, not with my kids. For the kids who can talk, ranging in age from 3 to 9, I get a complete blow-by-blow of each minute that I am not with them. I mean that completely and totally literally.

My 4-year-old wins the award for most accurate and detailed. Picking her up from four hours of preschool gets me at least one hour of replay.

"First you dropped me off. I put my jacket and backpack away then I colored a picture, Ethan was next to me and then I had to go potty..."

You get the picture.

I will admit that sometimes I want them to be quiet. I want to hear a song on the radio without my children talking over it. I want to drive home in peace and quiet.

Then I think of the alternative. My kids will probably reach a time where they do not tell me everything. Where just the tiniest morsel of information has to be extracted from them. Some of my friends already have that happening with kids that are as young as 4.  By telling me everything , my kids are sharing with me that I am still cool, that they still love me and they think about me during the day.

So I will continue to listen to every word my little ones say and ask them questions to keep them talking in hopes that the dialogue doesn't end.
