Obits: Torma, Garrett Pass Away

Paul Raymond Torma, 71 of Austell, was born in Passaic, NJ in 1940 and died Jan. 22 of prostate cancer.

He will be sorely missed by family and friends. He was a man of many accomplishments. He was a U.S. Marine who bravely served three tours of duty in Vietnam. His last tour came during the evacuation of the U.S. Embassy and the fall of Saigon. He was a great American patriot who adapted and overcame many things during his lifetime. He was particularly proud of obtaining his Bachelor’s degree later in his life. He is survived by his life partner, Allison Schaeffer; children, Paul Torma Jr., April LaPole; siblings, Georgia Cina, Richard Gros, Dorothy Britton; grandchildren, Gabriel LaPole, Tiffany Epperson, Brittany Torma; and great grandchildren, Hannah and Hayden Epperson.

To quote Charles Greene “When Paul liked you he was the best friend you ever had.” A memorial service honoring his life will be held at Davis-Struempf Chapel on Thursday, Jan.26 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service on Thursday from 12 - 2 p.m.. Hugh Durrell Garrett, age 94 of Austell passed away on Jan. 18 at Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell. He was born to Gordon Durrell Garrett and Bessie Ellis Garrett on May 3, 1917 in Memphis.

After high school, he joined the Army Air Corps at the age of 24 in 1941. He worked as a building supervisor for Western Union Telegraph Company for 55 years.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Bertha Molock Garrett; son, Gordon "D" Garrett and his wife Vicki of Powder Springs; sister, Fay Bellah of Stockbridge; brother, Gordon E. Garrett of Decatur; grandson, Tony Garrett of Mableton; granddaughters, Deidra Garrett of Mableton, Sara Garrett of Cartersville, and Laura Beth Garrett of Cartersville and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral service was held Friday at in Mableton  with Rev. Terry Braswell Jr. officiating. Interment  followed at Northview Cemetery in Cedartown.
