No Deportation for Jesus

Jesus Cruz, an undocumented Pebblebrook grad, will get to stay in the U.S.

Jesus Cruz, an undocumented Pebblebrook graduate, can breathe a little easier now. He is no longer threatened by deportation, thanks mostly to an announcement from President Barack Obama in June.

Obama announced that his administration will cease deportation for illegal immigrants who meet the requirements of the DREAM Act, which would allow illegal immigrants without criminal records but with high school diplomas or military service records to remain in the U.S.

Cruz, who is DREAM Act-eligible,  was facing deportation because Cobb County Police arrested him in August 2011 for driving without a license, which he cannot obtain in Georgia as an undocumented resident.

In May, a judge granted Cruz his second two-month extension, and his deportation hearing would have been Monday.

"The policy shifted a little bit down here," said Julio Moreno, Cruz's attorney. Moreno works at The Fogle Law Firm, which specializes in immigration issues.

Moreno said he received a call from Chief Counsel Greg Radics who said he reviewed the case and changed his decision, in light of Obama's recent announcement.

Last week, the judge terminated future proceedings so that Cruz no longer faces deportation, and he plans to get a work permit next week, Moreno said.

Now, Moreno can at least get a driver's license. Although, Moreno said he still faces obstacles. For instance, under Georgia's new law, Cruz is barred from attending any public Georgia college or university.

Moreno said Obama's recent executive order is "not a cure-all."

"But I think it's a step in the right direction, something that can put him (Cruz) on the pathway to permanent residency and ultimately, citizenship," Moreno said.

Since we seem determined to give this country away and I am going to have to learn Spanish anyway, not the other way around, I have heard that Ecuador has a thriving American ex-pat population and it seems like a good time to put a plan in motion to leave the country that I gave my blood, sweat and tears to and seek a more freedom loving country. America, you had a good run but I guess 200 years is the expiration date on greatness.

Sorry you cannot see the true greatness and destiny of America...it is just coming into its own as the melting pot of all the diverse peoples of the world....this is a great time for America and the world...imagine...the only country with such a rich diversity and where there will be no majority race in my lifetime...a true "United" states with a rich unity in diversity. This is the true greatness of America--not its material wealth and not its military might, both of which are necessarily diminishing in this new world where spiritual distinction will rule.

He plans to get a work permit next week. So it starts. If he gets a job that a citizen applied for (and was well qualified for), we citizens may as well completely give up. And Richard, no point in replying to me. I know how you feel.

First of all, let me state it again....there are plenty of jobs and I can help anyone get a job (another service I and my orgs provide to the community), including you Pam and anyone who wants to work. (Note: it may not be a job in the field which you want, for now, but it will be honest work with a living wage.) I find that most Americans just want to complain so people like Jesus and others who are "newer" Americans and are happy to work will find and keep employment.
I have made this challenge repeatedly in all of the media....if anyone feels that they have been or will be displaced by an immigrant I will help them find a job (and, no surprise, I have never had a taker from those that complain about the immigrants:-) but the offer still stands! (I am a business consultant and companies which are hiring contact me for workers, and I never have a shortage of open positions, but again, it may not be exactly what you are seeking but I know that in my life I have had to take "filler" jobs until I found exactly what I wanted.)

Jobs: customer service, sales, marketing, office, warehouse, etc, etc.
A big part of getting the job is getting the interview and then selling yourself. I can train anyone to do this and give free job workshops on it and then connect people to opportunities. But if you send me your resume I can work one on one with you too (pilgrim1@mindspring.com) .

First off Richard, Jesus isn't an American. He is a citizen of whatever country he came from. I have nothing against immigrants, my grandparents were immigrants, but guess what. They came here legally, signed the guest book and did what it took to become citizens. They didn't have the luxury of being able to simply slip across a border and then thumb their nose at those who were true citizens. They didn't insist that America conform to their home country, instead they worked hard to adapt to their new home country. They asked for nothing from the government other then a chance to fulfill their dreams. And now the country of their dreams is becoming the very type of country they fled. One in which the government dictated every aspect of their life. Rules were only imposed on political opponents.

As far as jobs, no sense seeking a good one since the current attitude in the country is if you succeed you need to be punished. Success is no longer celebrated but rather it is demonized. I'm sorry America is not simply another country no greater then Somalia. It was unique.

To me Jesus has earned his right to be an American. And your version of history and especially the history of immigration to this country is certainly myopic and revisionist. Many groups, including Italians, Irish and others came here illegally at the time (one reason why italians, my ancestors, were called "wops" which means "without papers") and others forced their way in and displaced others through violence and other treachery. And yes the government did help them, and they worked hard, and they learned the language--guess what....just like the current wave of immigrants from south of the border (who incidentally, according to all independent studies, are learning English and assimilating faster than our European ancestors did). All of what you are describing about the current immigrants were said about our ancestors by the dominant groups of WASPS at the time and you are just repeating the untruths of the past which are spread now by those who want to see a white-only or white dominated society (if you want that you may have to go to the North Pole). That is gone and that is not America...and is not the world which God or whomever you believe in created....one rich in diversity like the flowers of a garden or a rich buffet and feast. And yes, the day in which a few can succeed at the expense of others is over too...this is a spiritual revolution predicted by all the prophets...a great day to be alive!!!

R...he earned his right to be an American by being brought here as a child through no fault or decision of his own, by working hard in school to graduate and become a productive society member with the only law that he broke being that he drove without a license which the state would not give him...hardly a criminal. This is the only country he knows and it is his country.

And intentionally “Driving without a License” is the “Continental Divide” that separates us. This is BREAKING the LAW with a potential to KILL others…

Work Permit should be denied simply based on this act alone,
( if you can suspend disbelief of our current process long enough to do so).

MANY people live and thrive without driving, so why should this youngster be so SPECIAL?

And if he was brought here that means his FOLKS made the PERSONAL CHOICE to foul-up his life and CONTINUE to do so. Are they still here free as a bird?

I suppose I should be shocked, but given the climate of certain so-called Citizens concerning Illegals crossing our Borders....& the current White House.... I'm only appalled & disgusted. My grandfather emigrated from the Middle East in 1922. After fleeing that region with the fall of the Ottoman Empire. He didn't just sail into Ellis Island, but was required to wait YEARS in Cuba before he was allowed to enter the United States LEGALLY.

Thus, every Illegal that is allowed to remain in the USA is making my grandfather's path laughable, worthless & actually impinges on the Integrity of the United States Government.

To allow ANY Illegal to remain, is an Insult to EVERY Legitimate American Citizen & Legal Immigrant. But again, let's all FEEL good about ourselves & let everyone in until we just can't push anymore people into the country because we are full.

I agree. It's a slap in the face to all of the immigrants that entered this country the legal way. It's like giving a free ride to people who have broken the law. While I believe this young man would probably be an asset to society, the fact remains that he is here illegally. What the President has done regarding the illegal immigrants is a big problem considering they will all be given free reign to take jobs that U.S. citizens can't even get. Companies need to stand up and say "no", but they probably won't. I "chatted" with Jojo at AT&T yesterday and her/his attempt to make sense was laughable. The English language was being butchered up one side and down the other. But I'm sure that Jojo was not even in the U.S.

That is nothing but bullying and it shows a lack of self love and self-esteem. A history lesson: many of these people are mixed Native American...hmmm...who stole whose land?

Richard you are correct for sake of the narrow definition…

While humans are neither legal or illegal in and of themselves, ACTIONS can be either legal or not.

The biggest problem here is the conscience choice made by each individual to continue in this state of existence. They PERSONALLY, completely control that individual choice and this goes WELL beyond any specific “group” within the human race...

So again another instance of an undocumented DRIVING?

Why doesn’t this act appear to faze you in the slightest?
There is no right, just because of birth, to drive ANYWHERE.
Again how does one show respect?

And just for fun, other immigrants from Europe entered through the FRONT door at Ellis Island, not just suddenly “popping in” as if using a Star Trek Transporter station. WHY is that SIMPLE distinction so HARD to embrace?

Richard, it's no use bringing up things that happened 200 years ago. Things are different now. Society has to adapt to the state of our union. We are in trouble and adding more people will not help. If we allow 1+M illegal aliens to obtain work permits and they still can't find jobs, they will expect the government to take care of them. We don't have enough jobs for American citizens, even though you seem to think we do. We have new college graduates who can't find jobs and who will be competing with non-U.S. citizens. Things are different now. We cannot afford to be as "nice" as we once were and probably should be. A lot of people are losing everything they had. If you think those people (me included) should welcome these people with open arms, you have obviously no idea what it means to lose everything. It would be very difficult for me to encourage a company to hire Jesus, not because I think he doesn't deserve it, but because I can't find a freakin' job (and you haven't answered my question about what kind of jobs you know about) and there are a lot of people just like me. I feel like I'm being pushed aside so that these "new" citizens can be rewarded for being illegal.

R...ah, you believe the same stuff we were force fed about immigrants coming in "legally" at Ellis Island...until I did some research and found that that was true in only some cases but many had fake documents and other ways around the system to get in illegally, including my own italian grandparents I learned. This is common knowledge if one researches history...and every new immigrant group was opposed and called "illegal" and worse...so why repeat history when we should have grown up. Also, I have tons of documented proof that we all invited these 12 million undocumented people here for cheap labor (all major corporations and many small businesses and all levels of government including GA state government during the Olympics--and by extension every American who patronized and voted for them--so we are all complicit and hence "illegal" if anyone is). The Comprehensive Immigration Reform that we, including many conservatives like President Bush, Jeb Bush, John McCain, 150 evangelical Christian organizations including Focus on the Family, have been promoting would put an end to and fix the open borders issue, make realistic quotas and waiting times for legal immigration, provide temporary work visas for businesses that really need these workers, and include a path to citizenship for those who have earned it due to their hard work and other qualities. If the so-called "right" would stop blocking this the problem will be solved.

And Ellis Island arrivals were quarantined as required, one of MANY steps the current border jumper class bypassed.

And all those that hired them under the table will most likely burn one day, but I personally don't intend to allow this misguided approach to "continue" any longer.

Just because wrongs were committed in the past doesn't lock us in to repeat it, because we do grow and see the results caused by our "group errors".

I love how the phrasing of why he was driving without a license - because he cannot obtain one since he is undocumented!

Really? They would not issue one to him in Mexico where he belongs? So he breaks the law by stealing into our country, probably had free breakfasts and lunches during the schooling our taxpayers provided, and had free healthcare because thee providers cannot find these people with the false ID's.

While this young man is giving gifts he does not deserve and did not earn, we have people like Kathy Inman, whose only son was killed by a drunken illegal and left paralyzed and in pain. This was not the first casualty by this illegal who escaped from the hospital and is still free. She has endured many, many surgeries and has mountains of medical bills which she is expected to pay.

How about helping her Pellegrino? How about a fundraiser and providing for home care?

First of all they all had drivers licenses and insurance before the holier than thou crowd at the state legislature stopped that. And had the immigration reforms I have been fighting for both at the state and federal level (which are incidentally blocked by the Inman Dustin Society and their like) would have helped their family and may have prevented the incident in the first place. We have reached out to that family in the past but they are trapped in hate and manipulated by the leaders of their anti-immigrant organizations, who incidentally raise millions to fight immigrants and pass draconian laws--using the name of that family but apparently not helping them with any of those funds--a perfect example of the poor being used and manipulated by politicians, white supremacists, and other demagogues. A sad story indeed.

But who is helping that mother whose son was killed by an American citizen who was driving drunk? It happens every day. If a child gets free or reduced lunch and lives in an apartment, their parents aren't paying property taxes anyways. They are paying sales taxes, just like the illegal immigrants are paying. This is just to offer some information and to keep the conversation going. This is not an endorsement of either side of this very important and controversial human issue.

Shame on you Kiri - American citizens carry insurance and the insurance pays. It is not even close to the same thing.

Give the name of the mom who is paralyzed and has tremendous medical bills. Bet not. No one can give back Kathy Inman her only son, but also no one is helping them with the continued care she needs. And no one can deny that drunk driving is particularly a problem with illegals. Ask Kenny Schackleford, his daughter was killed with several of her friends, and what about Sheriff's Deputy Loren Lilly, killed by a drunken illegal who then left him to die alone in a ditch. There are web sites with lists of the many dead. But for the fact that they should not have been here in the first place, the deaths would not have occurred. We can educate our citizen drivers and there will always be some yahoos who do not follow the law, but we can demand that illegal drivers be deported out of our country. Who was the employer who provided the $$ for them to purchase a car? They should be held responsible, since our government continues to fail us.

Sales taxes do not pay for the cost of education - $8,000 per child per year or more, plus many other expenses. When a landscaper has 4 or more children and a big brand new truck, how do you explain how that is possible? Get real. Most citizens who pay heath insurance and their co-pays, etc. with two working parents cannot afford 4 or more children.

Kiri, yes it happens every day where an American citizen gets killed by another American citizen in a car accident. But I would bet that at least 90% of those citizens have insurance. If you get hit by an illegal alien, all bets are off. And if you are one of those people, it is a big deal to you. Also, are all of the illegals who have "jobs" paying payroll taxes? Probably not. While I do not believe that the children of illegals should suffer, it is a burden on our government to take care of them. In a great economy we probably wouldn't even be talking about this. But we are in dire straits right now and money used to help people who broke the law willingly is going to be looked at more closely. You have a job, so it really doesn't affect you that much. If I still had my job, I probably wouldn't care that much. But I have too much time on my hands and no money, so I do care.

Actually, many get their facts from firsthand experience within the system such as it is. This ISN'T a race issue at all, regardless of HOW HARD some try to CLAIM it is but a systematic failure of our leaders on ALL sides to address the needs of the country and the endless list of voters who allow it to continue by their own inaction .

The border situation would have a slightly different focus if the current President’s wife and daughters were to camp out along our southern border WITHOUT any Secret Service or other protections in place for a week or so.

As for "conservatives" donating more...I don't see any proof or source here so I guess it is another emotional claim which you so decry, but if they do that includes donations to churches and I am a strong proponent on taxing the churches (even though I am a "believer") and using those funds to help the poor like some other countries do successfully.

Either we are a nation of laws or we are a nation without borders. One cannot sustain an existence if there are no rules, no law, no restrictions. If one starts to ignore established laws, even one law, then there is no depth to which that person will dive in order to justify the ignoring or breaking of any law. If we are a nation without borders, then we are no nation at all. No nation, across the face of this planet, can endure a constant onslaught of immigrants (legal or illegal). The fact is that any nation would soon overflow it's borders, destroy it's infrastructure, crush itself in utter poverty in order to give everything to everyone that occupies the nation.

Children of Illegal Aliens are just as illegally here as their parents. I find it strange that people will go to bat for those Illegals when there are plenty of children legally here that need as much (if not more) help. One can only marvel at the type of mentality that chooses Illegals over Legals.

Also, please do not distort the debate...no one is advocating for an abandonment of laws as we are actually advocating for a package of new and reformed laws called Comprehensive Immigration Reform, but the fact is that you and I and every American conspired to break the past laws and looked the other way to invite 12 million people here to basically do our dirty work and work that no one else would do so not that they and we have done that it is un-American, in-human, un-Christian and just plain wrong to try to deny that, blame them, and turn our backs on them and try to get rid of them. I don't know why YOUR comments are allowed to remain, because YOU'VE labelled nearly each post to a specific person, which is a TOS Violation. But I must assume that your comments reflect those of the Editor & so they are allowed to remain.

Perhaps you should look up the words Legal & Illegal, before accusing me or anyone else as being Illegal. Breaking a law & ignoring a law intentionally are two different animals. Further encouraging others is an act of treason when it deals with foreign nationals that cross our borders without permission. These Foreign Nationals are nothing less than Invaders (regardless of their reason for Illegally crossing the border).

Clearly, you know nothing about me. I did not support the Shamnesty that was allowed under President Reagan. I recognized that allowing millions of invaders (illegals) would encourage more to come, & that was absolutely true. I've watched neighborhood after neighborhood become barrios in Georgia. I've talked with many others who've seen the exact same thing across this country.

BTW, I am NOT AGAINST LEGAL IMMIGRATION, in fact, I'm much in favor of it.

I do not believe the National Laws need to be change, but rather, the current laws need to be enforced. The first step in draining a swamp is to use your bucket to fill the water bucket.
