Mableton Cardiologist May Have Influenced Mother to Starve Teen

The family of the mother who allegedly starved her teen daughter to death believes a Mableton cardiologist who teaches that hunger is "wonderful" may have influenced her to do so.

Family members of a Mableton teen who was starved to death over the weekend believe a Mableton cardiologist’s “hunger” teachings may have influenced the teen’s mother.

Markea Blakely-Berry, 16, was discovered severely malnourished in her Mableton home on Concord Road on Friday. Cobb police have arrested and charged her mother, Ebony Berry, with murder.

It was later revealed that Markea was mentally challenged.

Berry’s family noticed that she had a Facebook connection with Dr. Andrew Chung, a cardiologist living in Mableton who encourages hunger and eating only 32 ounces of food a day, according to Grand Rapids’ WOOD-TV 8. Berry and her daughter once lived in Grand Rapids.

Chung, a familiar face to many in South Cobb, often is found at festivals in Mableton and South Cobb sharing his teachings.

He published and authored a book, Be Hungry, in 2007.

He told the NBC-affiliate that he knew Berry, but never encouraged her to starve her child.

He said was “shocked” and “surprised” and did not know that Berry even had a daughter.

Berry’s family members also blame the Michigan Child Protection Services for not acting on their concerns about Markea.

From 1999-2004, there were six different complaints about Berry to CPS, according to WOOD-TV. However, only once was a complaint investigated by the agency.

Chung, whose listed office is closed and appears to practice from his home, said he does not have feelings at all about Markea’s death because he did not know her.

He also said that there could be reasons that Markea was starved.

"When a parent chooses to neglect a child ... you have to think about what the reasons were," he said. "It's expensive to care for that child."

"A parent could reasonably decide that to care for that child would require harming the other two children," he added.

Dr. Chung sounds like an idiot. If she was following his advice, she was an idiot too.

shares that those who falsely think the advice to stop overeating is idiocy are suffering from the "hunger is starvation" delusion and need to be freed (John 8:32) from this delusion as explained in the http://WDJW.net/T3Book

I am speechless. Those last two sentences by Dr. Chung are mindboggling.

I sat a few minutes in on one of his classes once at the South Cobb library a few years ago. His teachings go against what any other licensed and practicing doctor would tell you. Going to school and getting your medical license just means you know how to take tests well and pay money for the fees. It does not mean you have common sense. And yes his quotes are quite odd.

Shame on the mother for being too proud to ask for help with her children.. I rather we help women who are struggling with a disable child to prevent a death than to spend any more time or money on women like Octomom who are now wanna-be porn stars and part-time celebs.

is reminded that Ms. Berry goes by the pseudonym "Evangeline Angelica" on Facebook. This is appropriate because she has been called to evangelism and has been evangelizing while incarcerated.

OK all you condemners LAY OFF THE DOC! Have you ignorant Cobb county folks every hearing of fasting?? I guess not if you do not know Christ, as far as this mother goes she probably has several screws loose! I am US Vet which for FYI the VA here contracts with Emory for their medical staff which Doc Andrew is a graduate of! Also FYI a Church of God friend of mine in Smyrna several years ago fasted for 40 days like Jesus did and landed in the hospital we are not God so don't try to think or be like him! There are lot of Doctors who write books, do new techniques, and fall off the mainstream that society wants, so all power to the Doc I know he is good person and actually does FREE TAI CHI classes in the Mableton area.
