UPDATE: Cobb to Hold Thursday Groundbreaking Event for Floyd Road Project

The project includes widening Floyd Road, constructing a median and the construction of a trail on one side of the road and a sidewalk on the other.

UPDATE:

Floyd Road is being redesigned as a four-lane road with a 20-foot-wide raised median dividing the north and southbound lanes. The 20-foot-wide raised median will be similar to many of the same medians with the same widths throughout Cobb County, like the median along East West Connector, which is filled with trees, grass and bushes.

James Hudgins, the pre-construction program manager for Cobb Department of Transportation, stated in an email, "The 20’ raised median will be equivalent to the raised median on the East-West Connector.   The 20’ raised median is a GDOT Standard, funded by GDOT, and follow GDOT standards."

This is a direct quote from Hudgins, who helped handle the project details.

Baldwin Paving will begin construction of the $5.5 million project on July 27. The project is estimated to be completed by Jan. 17, 2014. However, utility and weather delays could postpone the completion date.

More information, also stating the median will be 20-feet-wide and providing additional project details, can be found on the Cobb DOT website.

Attached to this article is a project map and details about the project as well.

Original Story:

On Thursday, South Cobb citizens are invited to the groundbreaking for the Floyd Road improvement project, which includes road widening and the construction of a 20-foot raised median.

The project area is confined by Clay Road to the south and Hicks Road to the north.

The project is funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation, and through a separate GDOT-funded program, the county will construct a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail on the west side of Floyd Road and a sidewalk on the east side. Eventually, the multi-use trail will connect to the Silver Comet Trail.

The design for the second project has just begun, Cobb DOT Pre-construction Program Manager James Hudgins told South Cobb Patch in an email.

Editor's Note: The groundbreaking event will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Historic Mable House.

I am going to assume that there is just poor explanation in regards to what this project is actually doing. For instance I don't believe they are going to build a 20' high wall. I think it should be a 20' length of raised median somewhere along Floyd Road. A 20' length isn't much but it sure makes more sense then 20' high or wide. I believe the bike trail is meant to be 10' wide for a distance not totally known at this time.

I understand what you're saying, Just A Grunt. This info came directly from James Hudgins, and I am going to post some follow-up to make sure it's as clear as possible.

the 20 foot raised median is incorrect. this widening has been approved for many years as has the funding. I am not sure why it has taken so long. as I understand it, from hicks to clay, Floyd will be widened but will remain a 4 lane with a median. There will be no more suicide lanes. I welcome the widening now that I drive a mini van. I have heard that they are going to have to take down some really old beautiful trees in front of the mable house and that makes me sad!

Hm, I wonder why the manager for this project sent out incorrect information. He specifically stated in the email "20' raised median." I'll update when I get a call back from him.

20' high or wide doesn't make sense at all.
Best advise I can give to all of you is to contact Woody Thompson our Commissioner and ask him for the correct information. He was in when it got started, in when it was blessed and is now in as it gets started.

Ask Woody and then report back.
