Chick-fil-A Flap not the First Time a Company has run Afoul of Customers

Have you ever boycotted a business because you disagreed with its politics?

Chick-fil-A is known for a lot of things – the chicken nuggets and waffle fries, the friendly and efficient staff, the cow statues hanging off billboards and urging people to ‘eat mor chikin.’

The opening of a new store can draw crowds of people willing to camp out overnight for the chance to win a free year of food. The restaurants are popular places for school fundraisers. And many people look forward to the promotional days that offer free food to those willing to dress up like the cow mascots.

But in recent days, the Georgia-based fast food chain has been catching flak for president Dan Cathy’s statements again same sex marriage.

Of course, Chick-fil-A is not the first company to take a stand that upset some of its customers.

In 2010, Target Corp. drew criticism from progressives for donating to the campaign of Republican Tom Emmer for governor in Minnesota. Some observers called Emmer the biggest opponent of gay rights in the GOP field that year.

Some Republicans boycotted Heinz ketchup during John Kerry's 2004 run for president. (His wife, Teresa Heinz, inherited the condiment company's fortune. Boycott supporters argued that buying Heinz products would help fund Kerry's campaign.)

So, have you ever boycotted a business because you disagreed with their political or social positions? Do you think such boycotts work to sway corporations? Tell us what you think in the comments area below.

I've stopped doing business with several companies over the years because I didn't like their prices, their products, or their lack of service, but I wouldn't consider this boycotting them. Although I disagree with his views in this case, Mr. Cathy is a private individual running a private company. He's free to state his opinions and reap the rewards or penalties from having done so. If it were determined that he directed his stores not to hire or serve gays or any other group, that would be another kettle of chicken. I only go to these restaurants maybe 2-3 times a year when I want some chicken nuggets; otherwise, I think their prices are too high so I don't eat there.

This was way too of an intelligent, well thought out statement for the internet. I'm going to need you to be a little more sensational next time.

Mr. Cathy has a right to his opinion and to be a bigot. I have a right to vote with my money and I vote to not spend any of it at any of his businesses.

‎"Jesus stood for holiness but didn't discriminate". Just as Chick-fil-A is a company founded on Christian, biblical principles, however we don't discriminate against gays. They are treated just the same with the same great service, respect, and dignity as everyone else that walks into that restaurant. And the groups they donate to are NOT "hate" groups. Fellowship of Christian Athletes for example is just a Christian organization therefore obviously they don't promote gay marriage... And Exodus International, another big company they donate to, is simply a support group for those who struggle with homosexuality. They don't go out and rally against gays. Either way, I'll always respect Chick-fil-A and Truett Cathy (and his family) for standing up for their beliefs and Godly principles. You don't see a lot of that in today's society... and since when is it wrong for a company to donate to organizations whose philosophies line up closest to that of their own?

I am in total support of Chic Fil A company to take a stand on a sickening disease popping up in this once strong Christ Centered country that now view Gays and their right to same sex union as the same marriage right between a man and woman which is disgusting!! I find this is bad behavior nobody is born queer they develop this through bad behavior, I say more companies and church groups need to be like Fred Phelp and his Westboro Baptist church in Kansas, I would work with any one Gay or have them around my children.

I am in total agreement and support with Dr. Moore, I am also US Service member and would not serve in military with them either for they are unable to make accurate decision with anything in the battlefield and behavior unbecoming of a officer.

Does anyone remember FREEDOM OF SPEECH? I am sure Mr. Cathy has his right to this also. I would bet he has been responsible for a number of gay people getting their college education, and giving them a job while they do it. One remark that someone thinks is negative, and everyone jumps on him. We all have the right to believe what we want. It is not each other we will eventually have to answer to. I have had many gay good friends in my life, and it is not up to you no me to judge anyone. Just remember, the majority of girls sexually molested, are molested by straight men. I will always admire Mr. Cathy for sticking to his beliefs and closing on Sundays. I guess some hold that against him also.

Freedom of Speech is a two way street.

It is his business and his expression of what he believes to be taught in our bible. So we can each also express our beliefs just as freely. Anybody up for a chicken sandwich?

Thanks for a voice of reason Kiri. Dr. Moore is hateful, spreading lies to fit his agenda. All with a forum to influence others. This kind of backwards thinking is why most of the country thinks people from the South are....backwards.

BB, I never want to come off as sounding hateful; my apologies. But, the bottom line is that God has NOT changed His mind about the sin of homosexuality.
We cannot change God's Word to fit our preferences; we must change ourselves to fit His Word.
